Good golf starts with a good grip. Our grip is our only contact with the golf club, so if our grip is faulty, our control of the golf club, and ultimately our shot, is compromised. Our grip needs to deliver the club face squarely to the ball at impact and it must allow the club head to be swung at maximum speed.

To generate speed, the grip must be placed in the fingers of the left hand (as opposed to the palm); this allows the club to hinge and allows much more speed to be generated. Both hands must also be aligned correctly on the golf club to promote square contact.

How to take your grip

Your grip is always best taken with the club held in front of you. Hold the club at a 45 degree angle with your right hand, making sure that the leading edge points up in the air.

Place your left hand in the shake hands position, run the club diagonally across your fingers.

Close your fingers first then place your thumb on top. Your left hand is now in position.

Keeping the club in place, follow the same procedure with your right hand. Close your fingers then place your thumb on top.

Quick tip: Grip the club with enough force to keep control, but not so much to reduce club head speed. 4 on a scale of 1 to 10 is ideal.

Bring your two hands together. You should notice that both hands lie “parallel” to each other. The creases between both thumbs and forefingers should point towards your chin and right shoulder.
